How fast UK printers, packaging makers and engineering firms promise to quote

Six of the 80 make-to-order websites we read say how fast they will quote: five promise 24 hours and one promises four hours. The other 74 give no time, though at least eight of them say their quotes are quick.

In short

Almost nobody who makes to order says when the customer will have a price.

  • 6 of 80

printers, packaging makers and engineering firms publish a quote turnaround time.

  • 24 hours

is the promise 5 of those 6 make. The sixth promises 4 hours.

  • 55 of 80

take quote requests through a web form, the most common route.

  • 18 of 80

describe no quote route beyond general contact details; 12 of them are engineering firms.

The promises

Five printers and one engineering firm say when a quote will arrive. No packaging maker does.

Of the 32 printers we read, 5 publish a quote turnaround. Of the 25 engineering and fabrication firms, 1 does, and of the 23 packaging makers, none. Five of the six promise a quote within 24 hours. One printer promises a fixed price within four hours of the enquiry. All but one of the six take requests through a web form.

Speed without a time is more common. At least 8 more firms say their quotes are quick, fast or rapid ("quick quote", "rapid quotations") without saying how quick. At least 5 promise a callback or a reply to an enquiry within a working day. A callback tells the customer when they will hear from someone; it doesn't say when they will have a price. Under our coding rules neither counts as a promise.

How requests arrive

47 of the 80 take quote requests by more than one route.

A web form is the most common route. 47 firms offer two or more routes and 28 offer three or more, so one firm's requests can arrive in a form inbox, a shared email address and a phone call, each in a different shape. Ten let the customer upload a drawing or file with the request, and four printers show a price online straight away.

Engineering firms say least: 12 of the 25 describe no quote route beyond an address, a phone number or a general contact form, and several of those win their work by tender. Where a site gives no route and no time, the customer's only signal is how long the reply takes.

If you run the quote desk

A published turnaround is rare enough to stand out.

A customer asking three suppliers for a price compares the replies as they arrive. On these websites, 74 of the 80 firms leave the timing to guesswork. If your estimators can quote standard work within a day, every week, saying so puts you among the six that do.

The catch is that a promise has to hold on the day the estimator is off. That is a capacity question before it is a website question. The order desk calculator works out what pricing quotes costs you a year from your own figures: requests a day, minutes to price each one and the estimator's hourly cost.

What Harrowell builds

Quote requests read against your own rate tables, waiting as a draft for the estimator.

We build AI into one division of a business and are measured on that division's own numbers. On a quote desk, each request and its drawing or spec is read against your rate tables, the gaps are listed as questions for the customer, and a draft quote waits for your estimator to check, change and send. The number we report every month is quote turnaround, from request in to quote out, against a baseline we measure before we build.

We have written up how this works in quote automation, and for printers, packaging makers and engineering firms in turn.

Questions

Quote turnaround: common questions.

How fast do UK printers, packaging makers and engineering firms promise to quote?
Few say. Of the 80 printer, packaging and engineering websites we read, 6 publish a quote turnaround: 5 promise 24 hours and 1 promises 4 hours. The other 74 give no time on their website.
What is a normal quote turnaround time?
Among the firms that publish one, 24 hours: 5 of the 6. The study shows what suppliers promise on their websites, not how fast quotes really go out, so it can't tell you what customers expect.
How do customers send quote requests?
Through a web form at 55 of the 80 firms, by phone at 37 and by email at 33. 10 let the customer upload a drawing or file, and 4 show a price online straight away. 18 describe no quote route beyond general contact details.
Does 'quick quote' count as a promise?
Not in this study. We count a promise only where a site states a time, such as 'within 24 hours' or 'same day'. At least 8 more firms say their quotes are quick or fast without giving a time.
Should we publish a quote turnaround time?
If you can keep it on your busiest week, yes. Only 6 of 80 firms do, so a stated time stands out when a customer compares suppliers. Promise what you can hit for standard work and say what takes longer, such as new tooling or complex drawings.

Method

How we counted, and what it can't tell you.

What we read
80 UK websites of firms that make to order, read on 5 October 2026 as part of our study of 209 suppliers, most with 50 to 500 staff. It is not a random sample.
What counts
A promise is a stated time for a quote, such as "within 24 hours" or "same day". A route counts only where the site tells customers to use it for a quote; a phone number in the footer is not a quote line. The counts of speed claims and callbacks come from our coders' free-text notes, so 8 and 5 are floors.
What it can't tell you
What suppliers tell customers online. It does not show how fast quotes actually go out.
Names and the full study

Next step

Thirty minutes on your quote desk.

Tell us what you make and how quote requests reach you. If we don't find anything worth doing, we'll tell you and leave.

Book thirty minutes

Or send us one order, or a quote request, and see the draft it becomes.

The Open Build. We’ll build one UK supplier a quote desk system, free and in public, measured on its own numbers. Everyone who applies gets a one-page read of their own workflow. Applications close at 5pm UK time on Friday 6 November. See the Open Build.
